Jamaican-American US Senator to Run for President

CALIFORNIA, United States, Wednesday January 23, 2019 – California Senator Kamala Harris, born to a Jamaican father and Indian mother, will seek be seeking to run on a Democratic ticket for president in 2020.

The 54-year-old Harris announced her bid for the Democratic nomination on Monday, Martin Luther King Day, on ABC’s Good Morning America television programme.

“I am running for President of the United States and I’m very excited about it,” she said.

Harris, who was born in California to Jamaican economist Donald Harris and Shyamala Harris of India who were both active in the civil rights movement in the US, joins a widening field that includes other female candidates like Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand who are seeking to push President Donald Trump from the White House after one term.

In the lead up to this first stage of her journey to become America’s first female President, Harris has risen through the California legal system. She has 20 years as a prosecutor under her belt, including serving as the district attorney in San Francisco and becoming the first African-American and first woman to hold the position of California attorney general.

Following the November 2016 elections, she became the second African-American woman and the first South Asian American to win a seat in the US Senate.
