NEW PATH AFTER BREXIT: Gloria Mills, head of equalities for UNISON

THE REFERENDUM was neither needed nor necessary. It was designed to deal with the internal divisions in the Conservative party on Europe. The debate has been divisive, xenophobic and openly pandered to racist sentiments, scaremongering and the scapegoating of migrants.

Now what we are left with is an emerging national crisis, a leadership vacuum and the risk of our country left adrift while the political fallout is resolved.

This is a time for reassurance, responsible and decisive leadership to guide and lead the country through uncharted territory, complex challenges and an uncertain future. Moreover, there is a need to share with the country the plans for dealing with the exit from the EU.
