THURSDAY FUNERAL FOR 104 YEAR OLD WW 11 VET

By Waltie Ainsworth

In his native community of Seafield he is known as Bassy……baptismal name ‘Arnold Bascom.  And at time of death he was 104 years of age and would have served gallantly in World War two.

Last November President David Granger awarded special commendations to Bassy for his contributions to Global Peace and Economic Development.  Bassy for a number of significant years worked as a private contractor with the bauxite company of Demba in Linden.  Later in life, he became a shepherd of sheep in his hometown.

This writer remembers him fondly when he lived in the house alongside the cross trench in Seafieled before he resettled later in Bengal…..a neighbouring village.

Six of his seven children will be attending the funeral ceremony on Thursday which will also feature a contingent from the Guyana Legionaire Organisation.

Meanwhile in the neighbouring town of Litchfield, over the last weekend, prominent villager and tailor Donald Dandu Abrahams was laid to rest.

Dandu 74, as he was familiarly called, spent his formative years in Kwakwanai and in the 90’s migrated to California.  A year ago, he remigrated to Litchfield and built himself a spanking new home for himself and family.  Dandu was looking forward to spending the rest of his retirement planting garden and reactivating his designing skills but this was not meant to be.

Immediately after the funeral the mourners made a right about turn to celebrate the 100th birthday of his stepfather, Mr. J.D. Layne.  Both these events took place at the Litchfield Church School and several pigs, sheep and a fatted calf were slaughtered to celebrate the birthday and passing of Dandu ….both celebrants in their own rights.
