EUSI KWAYANA CELEBRATES 90 WITH VIRTUAL LOYA JORGA

By Waltie Ainsworth

Recently, April 4, 2015 Eusi Kwayana celebrated his 90th birthday and fielded electronic communications and greetings from friends, family, compatriots and former students alike in the comfort of his home in California.

Mr. Kwayana, formerly known as Sydney King, is originally from Buxton and has been a staple in the political arena. He was a founder member of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and the Working People’s Alliance (WPA), and a member of the PNC.  Two decades ago when the PPP ascended to power, Kwayana brushed up his passport and literally walked away from the love of all his associates, students and friends.

At age 90 he is still active writing articles and books, conducting lecture tours and acts as a cultural consultant of the WPA entity of the PNC, who have also joined with the AFC to contest the National and Regional Elections on May 11. Last Saturday’s celebration more looked like a loya jorga even though it was online. Scores called in from Guyana, New York, Washington and Canada.

The upcoming elections on May 11th, took second place to the discussions surrounding the mutilation of Buxton resident Ms Samantha Benjamin, whose mutilated and unclad body was found floating outside of Annandale a fortnight ago.

One observer noted a distinct pattern in Guyana in which victims of crime in 90 per cent of all cases, the victim is always more qualified, richer and smarter than the aggressor. In the killing of Ms Benjamin, her attacker was an Indian young man who worked as a gardener and errand boy for her. The big work for that is a batahaa. Ms Benjamin was married and lived and worked in Connecticut as a licensed social worker. She was home on vacation when she met her untimely death. Two others have been held in connection with her gruesome murder.

Her 19 year old daughter is bringing her body back to Connecticut for a massive home coming on the 18th of April featuring drums and cultural displays; Kwayana has been invited to participate.
