COMMUNITY MOURNS AUNT SUE-LING

By EWALT AINSWORTH 04 22 2914

Notoriety was easy for this sterling comrade who dedicated a life time of simply raising kids irrespective of the underlying narrative. She gave and they gave back; there was a piano and rewards for those who mastered the art form. There was also a cricket bat and a rounders racquet so that the concept of sharing was glaring.

It was about family-neurship….family and entrepreneurship that was in abundance. A fortnight has passed since Aunt Sue-ling… literally a matron of honor has aborted her Facebook connections and has moved to a parish where there is no pain.

The immediate families traded in their respective comfort zones in Indiana, Brooklyn, Baltimore, Louisiana and every other port of call to be in Guyana for the massive community outpouring for Aunt Sue-Ling.

Her given name was GLADYS SUE-LING THUESDEE was laid to rest in her home turf of Ann’s Grove on the East Coast. Some of the comrades are returning slowly while others are lingering for the Parish Tea….literally killing two birds with one stone.
Aunt Sue-Ling had she lived would have celebrated her 94th birthday, Labor day….May first. She died at the home of her only child, Laurel, who lives in Brooklyn and is born April first.

And it is with the two birthdays in focus that I write.
Most if not all of my lifelong friends were harvested from the birthday parties in my infinitesimal ….small days on the East Coast. Aunt Sue Ling had a mac-mansion at Bee Hive and literally every Easter Saturday like clockwork, a party was held.

The freeco as we used to refer to it in those days featured a band…SID AND THE SLICKERS. She was a Matron at the Mahaica hospital and was married to John Frank.

Together they raised more than a dozen nieces and nephews and the home was always hectic with activities. And once you attended the freeco on a Saturday one would move on to the payco on a Sunday, and Parish tea the next Monday. These paycos came with guarantees and the young ladies who nested in Bee Hive would bristle with fine garments and good companionship immediately thereafter.

The Victoria crew included men like BABO, TAO, JOE, WIA, CHATTER, SPRACKA, POMPEY, ICECAP, PIGGY, WAX and Sammy Blackett.

Once we had a fiasco. Uncle John, head of household, did not like the idea of strange-man coming into his house and dancing permanently with his daughters in the light of his home boys from Ann’s Grove being left empty handed. And so at one of those freecos in 1970, PIGGY, now deceased, and nephew of Aunt Sue-Ling was asked to leave for some infraction.

PIGGY declared…I don’t care. I drink yuh rum; I eat yuh food; A dance with yuh wife and now I will kick yuh dog. Johno got mad and haul a twenty-two after PIGGY declared he will kick the dog.

All Victoria men had to hide. I had hijacked my father’s new MORRIS OXFORD…PZ 5986 and it was pointing east. The Ann’s Grove men pick up Uncle John fire rage and started a hand to hand combat. We were no match and decided to flee but the dozen or so men harvested paling staves and were in hot pursuit. I managed to get behind the wheel but the men were coming and my crew literally pushed the car in reverse at speeds in excess of 35mph for a good distance before we were able to turn around, jump in and operate on petrol.

Fortunately for us the following week was PARISH TEA and like clockwork, the girls came thru and we were all reunited.

Aunt Sue-ling imparted on the beloved a sense of community and friendship. She would always sponsor gala dinners and celebrations for the dozen-odd members of the family that lived with her. She also raised chickens and sent everyone to high school and extra lessons so that all and sundry can get an opportunity at this game we all call life.

We miss you greatly dear aunt…
