World Bank Economist Laurence Clarke died in Mozambique after a battle with pancreatic cancer, the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) said on Monday.
He was 63 years old.

“Laurence had a long and distinguished banking career both locally and internationally,” the part with which he had an association said in a brief statement.

The party said he died in a hospital in Maputo, Maozambique. He was the Country Director for Angola, Mozambique, and Sao Tome and Principe, in the Africa Region. 

A one time regular contributor to the letter columns of the local newspapers, he was remembered as the youngest Deputy General Manager of the now defunct Guyana National Cooperative Bank (GNCB).

Clarke, who was versed in English, French and Portuguese, was a Director of the World Bank which he joined in 1978.

He hailed from the lower East Coast Demerara village of Plaisance and was an old student of Queen’s College from 1962 to 1969.
