A well-known criminal lawyer in Peel has been charged with smuggling marijuana into the Don Jail in Toronto for one of his clients.

Plainclothes Toronto Police officers arrested Deryk Gravesande, 59, of Toronto, on Monday afternoon at the Brampton courthouse.

Police allege he visited the Toronto jail on Jan. 20 with eight parcels of marijuana for his client. Correctional officers became suspicious when they smelled marijuana and they contacted police, said Cst. Victor Kwong.
Gravesande has been charged with trafficking in a controlled substance. He was released on bail and will be back in Toronto court on May 1.
Gravesande was in Brampton court today representing a client.
Although he practices out of Toronto, Gravesande is a regular at the Brampton courthouse and has taken on a number of high-profile Mississauga cases. He represented Karim Creighton, who received an 11-year prison sentence for his role in the Jan. 3, 2007 drug-robbery slaying of Otis Johnson, 34, in Cooksville Ontario Canada.
