Jamaica seizes “elevated” radiation Japanese spare parts destined for Guyana

(JAMAICA GLEANER).-Jamaica Customs authorities have revealed that in the last 13 months, tests conducted at the nation’s ports have confirmed the presence of higher-than-normal levels of radiation in two shipments from Japan.

The most recent case, according to Assistant Commissioner of Customs Velma Ricketts, came last month when a trans-shipment container carrying used motor-vehicle parts destined for Guyana was scanned at the Kingston Container Terminal and its radiation levels was determined to be “elevated”.

The first case involved a minibus imported by a local used-car dealer in November 2012.

“The JCA [Jamaica Customs Agency] has been on high alert since the earthquake affected Japan,” Ricketts said in an emailed response to queries by The Gleaner. Continue reading

In Guyana, Feeling Stifled After Needling Government in Song

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — Dressed in a bright yellow hat, garish green shirt and oversize red tie, De Professor danced onstage, his waist-length dreadlocks following behind while he sang of government wrongdoing.

“With all de corruption dat taking place, we is de ones they blame,” the song, “God Nah Sleep,” went. “While dem a thief, thief, thief, we just sit down like if we lame,” he continued, complaining of public inaction in the face of widespread graft.

The performance was so well received that it delivered the 43-year-old singer, whose real name is Lester Charles, a victory early this year in the annual calypso competition in Guyana, a tiny country on the shoulder of South America.

But the song so angered the government minister for transport and hydraulics, Robeson Benn, that he stormed into the state radio station’s offices soon after and, according to numerous accounts, demanded that it be banned, along with an array of other competition-winning calypsos.  Continue reading

Mr. Dale Callender released a text message on the passing of his mom…Ms Pansy Saul-Chance over the weekend.  She lived in London for 56 years on almost the same amount of time at 56 PITKIN RD, MITCHAM, SURREY.
Aunty Pansy also maintained the same telephone number, strictness and discipline as a spinster after all these years.  She will be funeralised on January 16th  above her older son Maxime Orin Berefsford MOB-fuh-short……former British  military officer.  She also has three daughters…Elon, Dolphine and Natalie.

Had Aunty Pansy lived another month…February 1, she would have been 81 years.  The perennial family reunion of sorts affecting her siblings, offspring and  friends is now dashed.   Continue reading

By EWALT AINSWORTH                                                 01 04 2014

The re-opening of the Anna Regina Community High school on Monday hangs in the balance.    On Friday the principal Ms Pauline Davis complained of flu-like symptoms and was taken to the Suddie hospital where she subsequently expired.  Worse, no medical explanation may be fort coming.  Death is the expected outcome and business model up and down the ethnically challenged regions of Guyana.
