A man Tuesday night hacked to death his estranged wife, who was living with another man, before burning down their Bridgetown, Barbados home and attempting to commit suicide.

Relatives here in Guyana identify the woman as Brenda Duncan Taylor-Belle of 50 Russell Street, Charlestown.

The woman’s daughter, Paula Duncan, identified the assailant as 64-year old Alan Belle of St. Barnabas, Bridgetown, Barbados.

Duncan said her stepfather was having a relationship with a woman while her mother was in Guyana four years ago. When Brenda returned to Barbados, she found the woman living in the house.

According to Paula, her mother broke up with Alan and eventually struck up a relationship with another man.

An enraged Alan last Saturday stabbed his wife to her shoulder while she was imbibing. A police report on that incident was pending, Paula said.

Things turned for the worse Tuesday night when Alan returned to the home of his wife and the other man and began shattering the windows. His wife and the man fled the building.

Moments later, he caught and chopped her about her body. He then went to the home that he and his wife had originally shared and burnt it down.

Though he ingested a poisonous substance, Alan did not die and was up to late Wednesday in police custody assisting with investigations.
