NEW ORLEANS – After graduating from Xavier University with a 4.0 average in both chemistry and pre-med, Asia Matthew went looking to beat the odds. She wanted to enroll at the prestigious University of Massachusetts Medical School in a selective, eight-year program where you concurrently earn a PHD and MD.

It’s a rigorous program where you earn the doctor’s degree simultaneously with a PHD in biomedical research.

However, only the best get in. Hundreds apply and the school annually interviews only 40. From that group, between seven and ten are chosen.  Continue reading

ROLL ON ROLLER

ROLL ON ROLLER

By  Ewalt Ainsworth                              07 22 2012

ALUTA CONTINUA.  On Sunday shortly after noon a massive tanker with enough fuel supplies to re-start the Linden power station arrived without incident.  The able-bodied women and seasoned men controlling the make shift road blocks gave the verbal thumbs up ROLL ON ROLLER.  But the struggle continues for the fourth consecutive day; not even the “Babylon” can get thru without chanting their intentions and sanctioned by the community based road-runners.  ASOMELYKAM.

Sunday there was no Episcopalian church in places like St Francis and St Cuthbert Missions.  The visiting priests normally access the communities via Linden.  And food shortages are reported in places like Ituni and Kwakwani…as side effects of the Linden protests.    Continue reading

EUSI  KWAYANA: SILENCE  IS NOT A CHOICE

By EWALT AINSWORTH                                                      07 19 2012

ALUTA CONTINUA. “Silence is not a choice” says Eusi Kwayana and is calling for a crusade to resist and desist from the entrapments of the PPP government  to create chaos as more and more homes of PPP activists are set alight and punctuate the Linden night sky.  Some government buildings too are being targeted and the usual volunteers to put out the fires are thumbing their noses at the rancid Prime Minster, Sam Hinds (missing in action.)

Kwayana wants peace loving people in the aftermath of the Linden slayings by police not to become historical and hysterical but to stand wherever they are and protest.    Continue reading

As unrest continued in Linden against a steep hike in electricity rates, three Western Nations on Thursday appealed for calm with at least one of the diplomatic missions banning its staff to travel to Linden.
“We appeal to all parties and stakeholders to work together in a spirit of national unity to prevent any further violence and to resolve current tensions through an open and inclusive dialogue,” the Canadian, British and American diplomatic representatives said in brief statement.    Continue reading

ROHEE:  SHOOT TO KILL

BY EWALT AINSWORTH                07 16 2012

Aluta continua.  The deaths of five males and scores of injuries in Linden may never be avenged but the patina…the brilliance and resilience of a people to seek and see a brighter day will not be spirited or restricted.  The government wants to be apologetic for the deaths but at the same time blaming the joint opposition for the police tolerating within its ranks allegedly hired-guns embedded within the ranks.

These non-officers are also using their own guns with live-rounds rather than pellets or rubber bullets.  This distressing fiasco is not regrettable but the deaths seem to expose the dirty tricks of the administration.  Commissioner Brummel too, has to prove his mettle and leadership qualities.  The commissioner should take heed that more families, more women especially are prepared to go down rather than pay increased tariffs for an oversupply of electricity originating in the industrial and mining community.   Continue reading

SUICIDE:  GT IN DEEP DU-DU

By EWALT AINSWORTH    07 15 2012

A fortnight ago a prominent lawyer and former Speaker of the House Mr. Ralph Ramkarran flew in a rage and stumbled out of a meeting with his peers.  Immediately after that episode, Mr. Rankarran tendered his resignation from the Central Executive of the PPP in which he was a life-long member.  GT in deep du-du.

Mr. Ramkarran was called a “crab-dog” for brining attention to the high level of corruption and  lack of foresight at all levels of the administration.

This episodic behavior should be the warning sign to put the big-man on some type of observation to stave off suicide.  Suicide more often than not is fuelled by rage and in a similar case a ten year old boy in Region Three, flew in a rage over the weekend after his mother was delinquent in handing him his meals on time.  This time na lang time.  It is a myth that children are resilient and can handle any and everything but research particularly in Sweden and US shows that environmental, developmental and generic issues push children over.   Continue reading
