March 19. 2012 – Demerara Waves.

Fresh from Sunday night’s decisive victory at the 12th Annual Gillian Brazier Basketball Championship in Antigua, team members are now stranded on theCaribbeanisland, awaiting a GUY$1 million package to get them out.

President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF),  David Patterson told Demerara Waves Online News ( ) that efforts are being made to get seek assistance from two corporate entities and government to wing out the Guyanese.

There are 13 team members and the Manager, Michaela Burnett.

Patterson said the Guyanese team had taken advantage of RedJet’s low fares to get toAntiguafor less than US$2,000. But with the airline’s suspension at the weekend, GABA now has to pay higher fares to return.

Latest quoted fares put the cost at US$340 per person on LIAT to leave on Wednesday and US$210 per person on Caribbean Airlines to depart on Friday. The longer the team spends, they would have to find additional monies for accommodation and meals.

The GABA President said the prospects look good based on the feedback that he is getting from the two corporate sponsors but he is still making efforts to approach the Ministry of Sport.

“I’m very, very confident in all the avenues that we are exploring all avenues. I’m hoping that by the end of today, we would have a clear idea,” he said.

Patterson lamented that the team did not deserve that experience, having performed so well.
